I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be living like this.
I have two beautiful young girls and a wonderful husband, but my illness is debilitating. Robin is our only bread-winner now. His job takes him away for days at a time, which leaves me at home with the girls – a joy, but also hard as I can’t take care of them as well as I should be able to. We really do try to give the girls new experiences, but Robin’s work is sparse. We live in a small flat above a shop, so there’s no garden for the girls to play in. Before our break, the furthest they’d ever been was to our local park.
We were referred to the Family Holiday Association by my heath visitor and were offered a week at a caravan park in Wales. Wales – what a perfect place for our first ever family holiday! The girls were ecstatic, they’d never seen real sheep before, never seen so much grass – and the air! The air was so fresh. Everything we could have possibly needed was on the site, so I didn’t have to move around too much. The highlight though, has to be the beach – seeing the girls running to the sea, screaming with delight and then running back to us was amazing. It was the most relaxing and motivating experience of our lives.
Now, we’re better than ever. Our living situation hasn’t changed, but we’re brighter about it. I’ve organised weekly trips to different parks with a friend to get us out and about. I feel more confident that I can show my girls the world, without putting too much pressure on myself. I have endometriosis, but I’m not going to let it control me or my moods. Robin is happier too, knowing that he doesn’t have to worry as much when he’s not home. I feel like we’ve been given the most wonderful gift, and we’ve so many fantastic memories that will last us a lifetime. And we are saving a little bit every month so that we can have another holiday soon. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.
