Benefits Of Training In The Mornings

Exercising in the morning can leave you full of energy, with an energetic buzz for the rest of the day, and can help you sleep better at night. It can also take the pressure off trying to train when you’re tired, hungry and guilt ridden.

Let’s face it- sitting at work or meeting friends later in the day feels great when you know you have already been out training.

It feels even better when you accidentally slip into conversation the fact that you have trained when others were in bed.

But let’s be even more honest - getting up early can be tough!

To help you get up and moving in the morning, here are some of the tangible benefits of doing a few sessions first thing in the day. 

Weight management

Aside from the challenge of completing 26.2 miles, lots of people start running in order to lose weight. Running before breakfast elevates the metabolism for the rest of the day. You will go about your normal day burning more calories than normal even though you are resting. It’s a great weight management tool – though make sure you eat well all day as your body still needs to recover in between runs.


Training your fat stores

During the marathon, your body will rely on two energy sources: stored fats and carbohydrates. You must get good at utilising both by training smartly. Early morning runs teach your body to use stored fats as a fuel source. Run easily at fully conversational pace and about 6 out of 10 as a perceived effort, and you will run a better marathon as a result.


Time management

Everyone can set the alarm clock 45 minutes earlier in order to complete a run, as long as you go to bed a little earlier to avoid compromising your volume of sleep. Once the run is completed, no matter how pressured or hectic the day becomes, there is no way you will have to miss your training, as the run is already banked.


Mentally rewarding

There really is something peaceful about the early morning run, and enjoying your own company. The quiet roads and lack of car fumes are much more enjoyable and it’s probably a lot safer as well.  

The grin factor

You will smile all day knowing that today's training is already done! Smile at fellow colleagues or friends who overslept and be proud. Of course you might still go to the gym for a core session, stretch session or to complete your favourite class, but the training is out of the way for the rest of the day.

But here’s the thing: you must persevere! Early mornings can feel hard at first, so begin very easily and let your body wake up, and fifteen minutes in you should begin to feel great.
